Diyar Al Muharraq, the largest real estate development company in the Kingdom of Bahrain, revealed the winners of its Landmark Entrance Design Competition, which offered creatives the opportunity to submit their architectural landmark designs for Diyar Al Muharraq's main entrance. The competition took place during the fourth quarter of last year.
The competition witnessed a wide turnout from GCC countries and Arab countries, including Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria. The event also gained traction from Asian countries, with entries received from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Iran, in addition to European countries like Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United States of America.
During the final phases of the competition, the judging panel met with the finalists to evaluate their designs and select the top three winning teams. The team awarded first place was announced and received a cash prize of USD 50,000. The winning team members hold Master's degrees in Architecture Studies and Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and have won the Marvin E. Goody Award from the same institute. Maryam Al Jomairi is currently submitting her Doctoral Thesis at Harvard University, while Latifa Al Khayat recently received the Aga Khan Travel Grant Award. The second place winners are a team from Istanbul Technical University, the architects Sinan Gunay and Nurhayat Oz were awarded a cash prize of USD 20,000. As for the third place, a team of graduates from the Department of Architecture at the University of Bahrain, including Ahmed Al-Abbas, Fatima Kalawadh, and Ghaida Mohamed, were awarded a cash prize of USD 10,000. Lastly, honorable mention accolades were awarded to the qualified finalists for their distinctive designs.

Diyar Al Muharraq launched the competition with the aim of fostering a spirit of creativity and innovation, by designing an architectural landmark that reflects authentic Bahraini culture and incorporates tradition and contemporary architecture to create a one-of-a-kind concept. Another key aspect of the competition challenged participants to submit a design that embodied the environmentally-friendly and sustainable nature of Diyar Al Muharraq as a project, while reflecting Diyar's vision of creating a fully-integrated township, enabling the monument to emerge as a vital up-and-coming design landmark within the Kingdom of Bahrain.
